PREFACE This book, an entirely new edition of An English Teaching Methodology by Eva Semlyén (Bucureşti, Editura didactică şi pedagogică, 1967), is addressed principally to threel audiences: (1) to the large group of already-practising teachers in Romania who might wish to hear about recent developments in pedagogics, educational psychology and linguistics, as these disciplines bear upon the teaching of English as a foreign language; (2) to the even larger group of universitylevel students who are studying to become English teachers in Romanian schools; and (3) to the ever-growing number of educators abroad who wish to learn about the methods and procedures used in Romanian schools to teach English.
In order to make our presentation as useful as possible to our first two audiences, we have followed the general format of the antecedent edition, yet we have updated it substantially. More importantly, we have introduced much new material which reflects developments in language teaching since 1967. At every point we have tried to keep the discussions lively and down-to-earth.
At those points where we have needed to be theoretical, we have added diagrams, sketches, or cartoons, in order to communicate our on-going concern for practical applications. Since we believe that good teaching must involve interesting visual as well as verbal techniques, we thought it appropriate to apply the principle even as we prepared this book...
